چکیده

1. Responses of oxygen-sensitive units in the prosomal haemal nerve of Limulus polyphemus were examined while varying the oxygen content of sea water bathing the intercoxal cuticle. 2. When exposed to high oxygen levels these units units maintained a continuous background discharge of spikes. Unit activity was inhibited when oxygen content decreased. Upon reintroduction of oxygen tonic spike discharge resumed. 3. Mechanosensitive units with receptive fields on the prosomal shield or intercoxal cuticle were also present in the haemal nerve. Neither the mechanosensitivity nor the background discharge of these units was affected by changes in oxygen content. 4. It is proposed that the oxygen-sensitive respiratory reflexes of Limulus are an adaption to existence in the tertidal zone. Published observations of the respiratory stress responses of many intertidal animals support this hypothesis.

The Relation of Respiration to Rhythm in the Cardiac Ganglion of Limulus Polyphemus

A study of the carbon dioxide production by the cardiac ganglion of Limulus polyphemus has shown a definite relation between the rate at which the neurogenic heart beats and the intensity of the respiration of the nerve cells which develop the rhythm. This has been demonstrated by the parallelism between the temperature coefficient of rate of heart beat and of COo production, 1,~ and also by th...

Sediment microbiomes associated with critical habitat of the Juvenile American Horseshoe Crab; Limulus polyphemus

Plumb Beach, Brooklyn, New York in USA is an important horseshoe crab breeding and nursery ground that has experienced substantial anthropogenic influence, including pollution, erosion and subsequent restoration. Since little is known about the relationship between sediment microbial communities and juvenile horseshoe crab survival, next generation sequencing was used to characterize and compar...

Opsin expression in Limulus eyes: a UV opsin is expressed in each eye type and co-expressed with a visible light-sensitive opsin in ventral larval eyes.

The eyes of the horseshoe crab, Limulus polyphemus, are a model for studies of visual function and the visual systems of euarthropods. Much is known about the structure and function of L. polyphemus photoreceptors, much less about their photopigments. Three visible-light-sensitive L. polyphemus opsins were characterized previously (LpOps1, 2 and 5). Here we characterize a UV opsin (LpUVOps1) th...

Effects of copper and cadmium on development and superoxide dismutase levels in horseshoe crab (Limulus polyphemus) embryos

Pollution by metals may adversely affect organisms through the generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS). In this study, we examined the sublethal effects of two metals, copper and cadmium, on horseshoe crab (Limulus polyphemus) embryos. Exposure to copper or cadmium at concentrations of 0.01-10 mg/L for periods of 4, 8, 16 and 24 h had minimal effect on embryo survival except at 100 mg/L Cu....

Functional differences in the multiple hemocyanins of the horseshoe crab, Limulus polyphemus L.

Hemocyanin in the hemolymph of the horseshoe crab, Limulus polyphemus L., is a high-molecular-weight copper protein which binds oxygen cooperatively and shows a higher oxygen affinity at pH 7 than at pH 9. Treatment with EDTA (ethylenediaminetetra-acetate) disaggregates the hemocyanin molecules and abolishes both the reverse Bohr effect and cooperative oxygen binding. Chloride ions interact wit...
